Worried over electro-magnetic frequency (EMF) emissions from a cell tower near your house or office? The Department of Telecommunications will soon come up with Tarang Samachar portal that can tell you a variety of data points on cell towers in the vicinity.
The Tarang Samachar will tell let people know the available cell towers around, the signal strengths and whether the EMF emissions are within accepted levels, RM Chaturvedi, Deputy Director General (DoT), has said.
Addressing a roadshow here on Wednesday to dispel fears on EMF emissions, he said the Indian norms were much more stringent than the global norms. “It is important to have stringent norms. But how do you ensure compliance? We must impose strict penalties for violations,” he said.
Quoting World Health Organisation (WHO) studies, he said that current evidence did not confirm any correlation between ailments and exposure to low-level electromagnetic fields.
Telangana Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma said the State government would back the campaign to spread awareness. “We are with the DoT on this. There are apprehensions among the urbanites on the ill-effects of emissions. We need to dispel them. This must be a continuous effort,” he said.
