The Union Government should revisit the four-decade-old ‘Handloom Reservation Act’, said K M Hanumantharayappa, new Chairman of Central Silk Board (CSB).

Speaking after taking charge as chairman, Hanumantharayappa said the CSB has requested the Union Minister to look into the problems faced by the silk weavers.

The Chairman, while recalling the discussions had with the Union Minister of Textiles regarding strengthening sericulture and silk industry, called upon the participants to avail themselves the benefits of various schemes of the government.

He felt the need for wide publicity to such schemes for effective implementation in the field.

HN Ananth Kumar, Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers and Parliamentary Affairs participating at the stakeholders meet, recalled his association with CSB as a Board Member and reiterated commitment of the Union Government to address the problems of the silk industry.

‘Colours of India’ is an initiative of the Union Ministry of Textiles for strengthening handloom sector and opined that the Union Minister of Textiles, Smriti Zubin Irani, intends to give a new colour to silk.

“The Central Silk Board should strive to make sericulture and silk industry a model for ‘Make in India’ concept of the Government,” said Ananth Kumar. He further added that the greatest threat to sericulture industry is China and the stakeholders of sericulture industry and the Central Silk Board should work hand-in-hand to make India number one in silk production.

At the stakeholders’ meet, TV Maruthi, Chairman, Indian Silk Export Promotion Council, said the achievements of Central Silk Board in production of quality bivoltine silk and congratulated the scientists of CSB in contributing for increase in production of silk to the present level of 28,500 tonnes as of 2015-16.

H Nagesh Prabhu, Member Secretary, Central Silk Board, said the commitment of the CSB is there for the all-round development of Indian sericulture and silk industry, and thereby socio-economic upliftment of the rural populace.
