The number of cases pending before the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) has come down significantly in the last two years, according to Justice Dev Darshan Sud, President of ITAT.

In an informal chat with presspersons on the sidelines of the opening of the proceedings of the ITAT circuit bench in Mangaluru on Monday, he said 1,00,574 cases were pending before the tribunal on January 1 2015. This number came down to 91,537 by January 1, 2017.

Speedy justice

He said that ITAT has started conducting the proceedings of circuit benches in cities such as Mysuru and Mangaluru in Karnataka and Coimbatore and Madurai in Tamil Nadu with the intention of providing speedy, easy and inexpensive justice delivery.

Speaking at the inauguration of the proceedings, Narotham Mishra, Principal Commissioner of Income Tax, Mangaluru, said ITAT has taken a great step to bring justice to the doorsteps of the assessees by conducting its proceedings in Mangaluru.

He said the Income Tax department will work to defend its appeals purely on merit. The week-long hearings of the circuit benches will be conducted by Iruturi Rama Rao, accountant member of ITAT Bengaluru bench, and Sudhanshu Srivastava, judicial member of ITAT Delhi bench.
