The Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union will launch ‘Nandini Trupti’, a flexi pack milk packet with a shelf-life of 90 days, on April 5.

Addressing presspersons in Mangaluru on Saturday, Raviraj Hegde, president of Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union, said that the union procures around 3.52 lakh litres of milk a day from around 60,000 farmer members through 685 milk cooperative societies in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. The union is marketing around 3.35 lakh litres of milk and 55,000 kg of curd a day.

Keeping in mind the present trend in the growth of milk procurement and since the conversion of milk into milk powder is not an immediate option, the union has decided to release milk in flexi pack with 90-day shelf life, he said.

The new product block to produce ‘Nandini Trupti’ milk has been set up at a cost of ₹28 crore. The fresh milk will be sterilised and packed in five-layer flexi film with a shelf-life of 90 days, he said.

Stating that ‘Nandini Trupti’ can be directly consumed without boiling, Hegde said the production unit has the capacity to produce 60,000 litres of ‘Nandini Trupti’ milk a day in 100 ml and 500 ml packets.

He said the Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union is planning to market this product in other states also.

At present, the union is packing and marketing four variants of milk and 15 variants of milk products in 47 different pack sizes.

Compared to other 14 milk unions in the state, Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union is marketing and manufacturing highest number of milk products in the state, he said.

The provisional turnover figures of the union for 2015-16 stood at ₹657 crore.
