Porsche launched its first sub-₹1 crore car, the Porsche Macan for ₹76.84 lakh on Tuesday in a glitzy launch event in Mumbai promising that the low price-tag will not take away its premium characteristic.

The new Macan variant equipped with a 252-hp (185 kW) engine is the fourth variant in the Macan line-up in India.

The company has already been selling the 242-BHP Macan S diesel, the 396-BHP Macan Turbo petrol and the 434-BHP Macan Turbo petrol. However, all the previous models have been priced about ₹1 crore.

“Although this is our lowest cost model launched in India, we don’t believe it has any real competition here. It is the lightest SUV we’ve ever built and it will maintain the premium luxury class that Porsche is known for,” Pavan Shetty, Director, Porsche India, told BusinessLine .

“We’ve already sold 2/3rd of our stock for the year before the official launch. Many people have bought the car before even seeing it,” Shetty said, while highlighting the impact on sales that Macan is already creating.

Like most other luxury car brands in India, Porsche sales had been suffering in the last one year due to increase in taxes on luxury cars which have led to a price increase by about 30 per cent. However, with new launches including that of the new Porsche 911 recently, Macan and Porsche 718 early next year, the company expects a big jump in sales.

The impact can be seen by the Macan launch itself.

“Macan so far has been contributing to only 5 per cent of our sales. With the new model, we expect that to grow to 20 per cent this year,” Shetty said.

Porsche is also ramping up its sales and service centres in India to support the growth.

The German automaker currently has six sales and seven service centres in India, which will be expanded to eight sales outlets and nine service centres.

The new Macan is being projected as the most practical car by Porsche.

The SUV can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds (when equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package).

It offers 370 Nm of torque, available between 1,600 rpm and 4,500 rpm, with the help of the engine’s two bar of boost pressure, charge-air cooling, petrol direct injection and variable valve timing.
