Luxury car-maker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has pared the cost in India of the Jaguar XJ, its flagship model, by nearly 30 per cent by manufacturing it at its plant here. It was earlier bringing in completely built units and assembling them.

This is the company’s third model being made in India and also the first time that JLR is manufacturing the XJ outside the UK.

The XJ takes on its German rivals such as the Mercedes S-Class and the BMW 7 series.

Launching the new, diesel powered luxury model in Pune, Rohit Suri, Vice-President, JLR India, said the parts for the XJ are being sourced from across the globe.

“It also has some Indian content, and we want to evolve this more in the long term,” he added.

The car comes in premium and portfolio versions, priced respectively at about ₹92.10 lakh and ₹98.69 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune).

According to Suri, JLR has a 10 per cent market share in India, selling 30,000 units in 2013.

“This despite having no presence in the smaller ‘compact’ luxury segment that comprises 40-45 per cent of the market,” he said.
