Electronics Corporation of India Ltd (ECIL) has signed a tri-partite contract with FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research), Germany, and Bose Institute.

This contract has been signed by Oliver Kester, Head of FAIR All Accelerator Boards, on behalf of FAIR, TK Ghorui on behalf of Bose Institute, P Sudhakar, Chairman & Managing Director, ECIL, K Vijayraghavan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, and other officials concerned.

This is the first of a series of tri-partite contracts for about 600 converters valued at €9 million (approx. Rs 70 crore). This is the biggest contract ECIL is executing for supply of electronic equipment to a foreign country and to be supplied in the next four years.

These converters produce stable magnetic fields in super conducting magnets. They have been developed by ECIL for FAIR, Germany.

International science centre

FAIR is an international science centre coming up at Darmstadt, Germany, for studying the building blocks of matter and the evolution of the universe. This is a highly sophisticated accelerator complex which will provide high-energy, precisely-tailored ion beams.

FAIR is being built through international collaboration and India is one of the partners. Other contributing nations include Austria, China, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain & Sweden.

India is contributing around €36 million in kind for this programme. It provides a unique opportunity for Indian scientists, engineers and industry to work in this unique, high technology project, a press release from ECIL said.
