Devvarman bows out

Second seed Somdev Devvarman failed to capitalise on a rousing start as he was beaten 0-6, 7-5, 6-3 by Ti Chen of Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals of the $50,000 Challenger tennis tournament in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday. Somdev collected $1460 and 15 ATP points.In the $15,000 ITF men’s Futures event in Calgary, sixth seed Sanam Singh made the quarterfinals. In the $15,000 women’s event in Barcelona, Snehadevi Reddy cruised past qualifier Seone Mendez of Australia.

Karman for US Open

Karman Kaur Thandi made the girls’ singles semifinals of the ITF grade-1 junior tennis tournament in Quebec, Canada, and the effort gained her an entry into the main draw of the US Open junior event, as a “special exempt”. Otherwise, Karman, ranked 86th in the world, was scheduled to go through the qualifying event.

The results: $50,000 Challenger men, Bangkok, Thailand: Singles (quarterfinals): Ti Chen (Tpe) bt Somdev Devvarman 0-6, 7-5, 6-3.

$15,000 ITF women, Barcelona, Spain: Singles (quarterfinals): Snehadevi Reddy bt Seone Mendez (Aus) 6-4, 6-2.

$10,000 ITF women, Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt: Singles (pre-quarterfinals): Kanika Vaidya bt Hortencia Birnbaumer (Bol) 6-0, 6-4.

Doubles (quarterfinals): Yulia Bryzgalova (Rus) & Kanika Vaidya bt Kamonwal Buayam (Tha) & Anastasia Kharchenko (Ukr) 6-7(4), 7-6(9), 10-2.

ITF grade-1 juniors, Quebec, Canada: Girls (quarterfinals): Karman Kaur Thandi bt Emily Arbuthnott (GBr) 6-2, 6-2.

Doubles (semifinals): Bianca Vanessa Andreescu & Katherine Sebov (Can) bt Jessica Hinojosa Gomez (Mex) & Y. Pranjala 3-6, 7-5, 10-5.
