In his first major singles tournament after his victory in Wimbledon junior doubles, Sumit Nagal came out with flying colours as he won the $10,000 Power Pak-ITF men’s Futures tennis tournament beating Ronit Singh Bisht in straight sets here on Saturday.
The 18-year-old produced a near clinical performance to beat Ronit 6-3, 6-4 to clinch his second Futures tournament of the year.
In the opening set, Nagal broke early in the second game and served impeccably to close out the set. It did not help matters for Ronit, who seemed to struggle with his movement after suffering a groin strain in his match against G. Prajnesh on Friday.
Speaking after the match, Nagal said, “The main focus of this tournament was my serve and I am really happy with it.”
To illustrate this point, in the opening set, Nagal lost only three points from his four service games and holding two games to love. However, in the second set, Nagal looked a bit wayward as he was broken in the sixth game to go down 2-4 and found it difficult to get his first serves in.
For Ronit, after an impressive show in the preceding rounds, his performance in the final was far from his best.
His usually strong groundstrokes lacked the energy to trouble Sumit.
In the second set, Ronit’s serves too lacked the energy and this seemed to affect Sumit’s performance too as the latter committed a few silly unforced errors.
Sumit later conceded that, “While it looked like an easy match, in the second set he was struggling and was conserving energy on some points and giving it the 100 per cent on some and that upset my rhythm too.”
But, Sumit quickly sorted things out to break Ronit’s serve in the next two games and finished it off in style with an ace.
The result: Singles final: Sumit Nagal bt Ronit Singh Bisht 6-3, 6-4.
