Defending champion and third seed Mohit Mayur Jayaprakash beat Statemate Mithun Murali 6-4, 6-3 in the opening match of the men’s singles at the Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship here on Monday.

The match began on equal terms, but soon Mohit took the upper hand, relying on his powerful serves and deep returns. From 0-2 down, Mithin came back against the big-serving Mohit to level the set 2-2.

The match went with serve till the ninth game before Mohit finally broke Mithun to wrest the initiative.

Mithun lost the momentum and became inconsistent. Despite managing to hold serve for three games in the second set with some impressive volleys, he failed to challenge Mohit. The defending champion increased his domination and made good use of his powerful serves to force errors. He broke an erratic Mithun in the eighth game before sealing the win with a backhand crosscourt winner in the next.

In the women’s section, Prerna Bhambri began her title defence with a facile 6-0, 6-1 win over Renu Sharma. With a strong serve and an impressive forehand, Prerna ran away with the first set and almost did the same in the second.

Her opponent struggled to not only reach the balls, but even get her serves in. The only chance Renu had was in the fourth game of the first set, when she managed to stretch the game to deuce on serve before double faulting to gift away the game.

She finally managed to hold on in the penultimate game of the match, positioning her returns well to keep the ball away from Prerna’s reach. But that was too late as the latter simply served her way into the second round in the next game.
