Devvarman and Sanam lose in first round

Asian Games doubles gold medallists Somdev Devvarman and Sanam Singh were knocked out in the first round of the $50,000 Challenger tennis tournament in Winnetka, Illinois, US.

The second-seeded Indian pair was beaten 6-1, 7-6(7) in the doubles pre-quarterfinals by Thanasi Kokkinakis of Australia and Denis Kudla of the US.

However, in singles, sixth-seeded Somdev pulled through easily into the second round while Sanam lost in the first round in three sets.

The results: Singles(first round): Somdev Devvarman bt Jared Hiltzik (US) 6-4, 6-2; Takanyi Garanganga (Zim) bt Sanam Singh 6-0, 3-6, 6-2. Doubles(pre-quarterfinals): Thanasi Kokkinakis (Aus) and Denis Kudla (US) bt Somdev Devvarman and Sanam Singh 6-1, 7-6(7).
