India’s P. Harikrishna’s draw in the final round of the Norway chess tournament helped World champion Magnus Carlsen triumph at home.
It was because of Harikrishna’s draw with Levon Aronian, the World No. 7, in the final round that Carlsen was able to come on top in a field of 10 in Norway, in what is one of the major events of the chess calendar, featuring half of the world’s top 10.
The Norwegian defeated Pavel Eljanov in Friday’s last round encounter to take his tally to six points. Aronian had to settle for the second spot, with 5.5 points.
Harikrishna, the World No. 13, finished seventh with 4.5 points.
The standings: 1. Magnus Carlsen (Nor) 6; 2. Levon Aronian (Arm) 5.5; 3-5. Maxime Vachier Lagrave (Fra), Veselin Topalov (Bul) and Vladimir Kramnik (Russ) 5.
6-7. Li Chao (Chn) & Pendyala Harikrishna (Ind) 4.5; 8. Anish Giri (Ned) 4; 9. Pavel Eljanov (Ukr) 3; 10. Nils Grandelius (Swe) 2.5.
