Sargunam and Jackson steer Trotters to semifinals

Vijay meets Grand Slam while UFCC (T. Nagar) faces Globe Trotters in the semifinals of the VAP Trophy one-day tournament on Saturday.

In the quarterfinals here on Thursday, Vijay defeated Alwarpet by four wickets, Grand Slam got the better of Nelson by 21 runs, UFCC notched up a four-wicket win over India Pistons, and Globe Trotters outplayed IOB by 88 runs.

It was also a day of some strong individual performances. Globe Trotters skipper X. Thalaivan Sargunam (124, 114b, 8x4, 5x6) added 185 runs in 153 balls for the second wicket with Sheldon Jackson (130 not out, 99b, 11x4, 4x6) against IOB. It was a match-winning stand.

Tamil Kumaran tricks

Experienced paceman D. Tamil Kumaran fired out M. Ashwin, M. Raja and B. Arun off successive deliveries to achieve a hat-trick for Nelson against Grand Slam.

Tamil Kumaran claimed four for 28 off 10 overs in a forceful spell, but his was an effort in vain.

That was a game where leg-spinner M. Ashwin’s four for 32 had the final say.

At CPT-IP: India Pistons 239 for nine in 50 overs (G.V. Vignesh 31, M. Prabhu 37, Ganapathi Chandrasekar 32, K. Sambasiva Sarma four for 37) lost to UFCC (T. Nagar) 243 for six in 48.4 overs (R. Ananth 73, U. Sasidev 46, Adithya Ganesh 42, M. Kamalesh 45 n.o.).

At MRF-Pachaiyappa’s: Globe Trotters 344 for two in 50 overs (M.S. Washington Sundar 51, X. Thalaivan Sargunam 124, Sheldon Jackson 130 n.o.) bt IOB 256 for seven in 50 overs (R. Aashish Kumar 80, Ch. Jitendra Kumar 39, Abhishek Hegde 34, A.G. Pradeep 38).

At MAC: Grand Slam 225 in 50 overs (L. Suryapprakash 30, S. Badrinath 68, N. Jagadeesan 37, D. Tamil Kumaran four for 28, including a hat trick) bt Nelson 204 in 47.3 overs (R. Nilesh Subramanian 61, M. Ashwin four for 32).

At IC-Guru Nanak: Alwarpet 143 in 46 overs (Ashwin Venkataraman 33, R. Kavin 39 n.o., L. Vignesh three for 27) lost to Vijay 145 for six in 28 overs (Abhinav Mukund 61, R. Vishaal four for 68).
