AHMEDABAD: The high-level committee meeting to select a new CBI chief remained “inconclusive” on Monday.
“The meeting will continue some other day,” a source told The Hindu . The committee, he added, had a panel of 49 names from which they would select the next CBI director for a two-year term.
The committee consisting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India K.S. Khehar, and the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, met on Monday evening in New Delhi to scrutinise the names shortlisted by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). The date for next meeting has not yet been fixed, the source added.
In December last year, the Modi administration had appointed Gujarat cadre IPS officer Rakesh Asthana as the interim head of CBI after Anil Sinha completed his term.
However, the Congress, other opposition parties, and civil society groups had slammed theappointment of Mr Asthana, who is considered very close to Mr.Modi and the BJP president Amit Shah.
