Eruthattam (bull chase) was held in different villages in Omalur and Mettur blocks in the district on Sunday.

Eruthattam is a usual affair in the temples in the villages as part of the Pongal celebrations till a few years ago. The farmers organised this traditional event of chasing the bulls, as thanks giving gesture for enabling good crop.

Eruthattam was not held in the last two years, due to the ban slapped by the Supreme Court.

With the State Government enacting a Special Ordinance for the holding of jallikattu, the residents of various villages in Salem district too were organising eruthattam for the last few days.

This event was held Karukkalvadi, Vaguthanur villages in Omalur block. The youths of these villages chased the bulls by holding the rope tied to thenose of the bulls on both sides, after offering worship in the local Amman Temples. At the event, the local people offered worship to the bulls and dispersed.

Similar eruthattam was also held in Kolnayakkanpatti village near Mettur on Sunday evening. The residents of the surrounding villages too participated in large number in the event held in the Mariamman Temple ground.

With eruthattam being held after a gap of couple of years, the local people expressed the hope that there will be bountiful rainfall leading to good crop in the forthcoming season.
