Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari urged teachers to focus more on improving the attendance and standard of teaching in government schools.

Addressing the general body meeting of ITDA here on Wednesday, he expressed displeasure over the functioning of schools in the district. He said the teachers were more engaged in union activities and fighting for their rights. Instead, they should also deliver what is expected of them and help improve the standard of education in government schools.

Mr. Srihari wanted district Collector Vakati Karuna and ITDA project officer D. Amoy Kumar to take steps to strengthen the Education Department. He said he would henceforth be reviewing the functioning of schools frequently.

“Education in Agency area has been neglected since many years. Besides standard of teaching, officials should submit a report on infrastructure like toilets, classrooms, power, and water supply in each school,” he pointed out.

The Deputy Chief Minister reviewed the functioning of the Health and Forest Department as well. He said there was improvement in health services in Agency areas. He promised to upgrade Area Hospital at Eturunagaram to a 50-bedded facility. Mr. Srihari asked officials to prepare a detail report to be submitted to the State government.

Tribal Welfare Minister A. Chandulal said efforts were being made to improve roads in the Agency areas and construct community halls for tribals at mandal headquarters. Girijan Bhavan would be built at the district headquarters, he said.

Ms. Karuna said they have sent proposals to the government for the improvement of facilities in the tribal welfare hostels, and plans are afoot to plant one lakh saplings each at Medaram, Laknavaram and Pakhala lake.

ZP chairperson G. Padma, and MPs A. Seetaram Naik and P, Dayakar were present.
