It’s common knowledge that every village in this district is reeling under severe drought and people are forced to trudge kilometres to fetch water, spending three to four hours a day. But surprisingly, here is a village where spring-wells have come as a relief.

That is the scene in Kamalapur of Peddashankarampet mandal for the past few weeks, located as the village is, adjacent to the Gopalaraopet tank.

The silt was removed from the tank, but it was not filled as there was no water. However, from an elevation in a corner of the tank, water has been oozing out from at least 10 spring-wells dug by the locals. The sight of water oozing out from a rocky formation has come as a blessing for the villagers.

These spring-wells get filled up again in a few hours after villagers take out water using their pots. Expressing gratitude to God, the villagers offer prayers and break coconuts. People from neighbouring villages are visiting the place and are offering prayers too. It all started with some shepherds digging a spring-well and becoming successful, making more people follow them.

“We feel that goddess Renuka Yellamma has blessed us and that is how we got water during the severe drought conditions through spring-wells. Have you seen any spring-well in the neighbouring villages? How is it possible without the blessing of the Almighty?” asks Ramulu, a resident.

Devotion among them is to such an extent that they have decided to construct a temple for goddess Renuka Yellamma, in the vicinity of the spring-wells.
