RTC denies student general pass to girls

July 22, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST

My daughters are currently studying in 10{+t}{+h}standard. Apart from school, they also attend tuition and have to commute by bus to the tuition. Instead of the free pass for girls, I was willing to take the student general pass.

But, the web-based form doesn't allow for girls to get the student pass. When I went to the Rathifile Bus Station, the person at the counter told me that girls are not given a student general bus pass because they are eligible for a free pass. This is very inconvenient, as many students attend tuition after school and paying for the commute separately for each trip is very costly. For example, the bus fare for my two daughters is around Rs. 40 per day which comes to Rs. 1,200 per month.

I am sure many families are facing the same problem.

When I am willing to forgo the free pass service, I expect that I can pay for and get the student general pass. When boys can avail the student general pass to attend tuitions and for additional studies, why is it that girls are being restricted to use the free pass from home to school and no subsidy is being given for transport to additional studies like tuitions. I hope that some action is taken by the RTC in this regard at the earliest, at least before this academic year ends. Kindly put an end to such gender-based discrimination!

Syamala Tata,

Malkajgiri.

Open defecation-free

Can the GHMC make Mayuri Nagar, within their jurisdiction, open defecation-free at least by end of 2016? I doubt, because even to set right overflowing drainage on the roads, they are taking six months to one year. The drainage woes in Mayuri Nagar about which I have been highlighting for the last five months continue even now. When will the GHMC wake up?

M. Anjanie Prasad,

Mayuri Nagar.
