The Telangana Prisons Department is all set to operate a petrol pump from June 1 on the premises of Mahabubnagar district jail. This was part of the Prisons Department endeavour to create employment for all the convicted prisoners housed in Telangana jails and make the revenue a surplus one.
Speaking to The Hindu , district jailer M. Sampath said that they have installed 12 fuel dispensers of the Indian Oil Corporation Limited, and petrol and diesel would be available. After launching petrol pumps at Cherlapally, Cenchalguda, Warangal in association with IOCL, Mr. Sampath said that the Mahabubnagar's petrol bunk would be fifth one the Prisons Department would be operating.
“We received excellent feedback from customers at all the five places so far, which motivated the Director General of Police, Prisons Department, V.K. Singh to open petrol pumps at all the prisons in Telangana in a phased manner to provide employment to all those who were convicted. The Mahabubnagar district jail has 265 inmates, that include 35 convicts, Mr. Sampath said. As many as 22 convicts and four warders would be deployed to run the petrol pump in three shifts from June 1 onwards.
Mr. Singh will inaugurate the petrol bunk in the presence of Collector T.K. Sridevi and other top officials from the district and Prisons Department. Deputy jailer J. Upendar was appointed as in-charge of the petrol pump to look after its entire functioning.
