September 03, 2015 03:07 am | Updated March 28, 2016 03:01 pm IST - KARIMNAGAR:

Ambati Narayana, 45, of Chinna Bonala village in Sircilla mandal, who took up cultivation of cotton crop by taking four acres on lease, committed suicide by consuming pesticide on Wednesday following crop failure.

Musku Nagireddy, 47, a farmer from Korandla village of Thimmapur mandal, secured loan to perform his daughter’s marriage. He was confident of repaying the amount by cultivating his three-and-a-half acre landholding. He cultivated paddy on one acre and sowed vegetables on the remaining two-and-a-half acres. But his hopes were dashed, thanks to a poor monsoon. The crops withered away. He committed suicide by consuming pesticide.

A tribal farmer, Bhukya Kobal Singh, 45, of Adavi Padira village in Yellareddypet mandal beat his wife, Bhukya Nirmala, 38, to death, and later committed suicide by consuming pesticide. He was disturbed over the failure of crops and his helplessness in clearing debts.

Poor rainfall for the past two years has shattered the dreams of farmers in Karimnagar district.

During this kharif season, farmers cultivated cotton on 2,31,493 hectares. However, the capital-intensive cotton crop withered away.
