Telangana CPI(M) secretary Tammineni Veerabhadram came down heavily against the State government alleging that it had failed to take up drought relief measures.

He wanted the government to provide water and work for rural people. In the absence of water and work, people are migrating to other places, he said.

The district unit of the CPI(M) held a huge dharna before the Collectorate on Tuesday demanding the government to take up drought relief measures on a war footing.

“The entire State should be declared drought-hit as the situation has worsened. People in many villages are suffering with lack of water. The government hasn’t taken any measures so far and no concrete measures are planned too,” he said adding that despite announcing Medak and Mahabubnagar districts as completely drought-hit, the problems of people were not addressed so far.

“Once drought is announced, the government should ensure that every house gets a fixed quota of water, work, fodder and water for cattle. People are getting water once in three days and that too insufficient,” the CPI(M) leader said.

The Union government is slowly trying to do away with the NREGS, he said, alleging that despite a budget allocation of Rs. 34,000 crore, only Rs. 3,000 crore was released.

The party delegates demanded immediate release of Rs.400 crore for take up drought-relief measures.

Later, a memorandum was submitted to the district officials.
