Keeping its word, the State government has ordered the pumping of water from the Devadula project to quench the thirst of residents of the tri-cities of Warangal, Kazipet and Hanamkonda.
The water level at the three summer storage tanks — Bhadrakali, Dharmasagar and Waddepally — was alarmingly low that there was not enough water to cater to the drinking needs of people.
In Bhadrakali tank, there is 77 mcft of water that can be used against it full capacity of 150 mcft. The Dharmasagar lake can hold 839 mcft of water and 336 mcft of water can be used from this tank.
According to Superintendent Engineer Abdul Rahman, daily requirement for the tri-cities 3.5 mcft of water. “Even for water supply on alternate days during the months of May, June and July, 200 mcft of water is required. We are planning to pump water from Devadula project to fill Dharmasagar and Waddepally tanks,” he said.
Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari took the initiative and got Rs.8.5 crore sanctioned for pumping water from Devadula. The pumping of water into Dharmasagar tank began on Wednesday. It came as a big relief for the residents and officials of the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC).
Two 150 HP motors were arranged at Devadula to pump water at Gangaram village.
Water is being pumped into Bheekghanpur tank, which is at a distance of 38.45 km., and then to Pulkurthy, which is at a distance of 61.48 km. From there, water is lifted and pumped into Dharmasagar tank, which is at a distance of 28.38 km.
The pumping of water began at Gangaram on April 27, but was stopped due to rain at the in-take well for three days. Finally, water reached Dharmasagar on Wednesday to the relief of residents.
Municipal Commissioner Sargaraj Ahmed visited Dharmasagar tank on Thursday to take stock of the situation.
