Baby of Pushpamma’ turns 79-days old today. She is now in the safe hands of doctors at the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) in the government hospital at Rampur village in Marpally mandal of Ranga Reddy district.

She was born a premature, underweight child (1 kg at the time of birth). On the third day after her birth, her parents abandoned her. Repeated phone calls to them by the hospital staff went in vain. Her parents, Pushpa and Shiva, left her as she was the third girl child in the family and doctors had told them that they were unsure if the girl would survive.

Meanwhile, her weight came down to 940 grams on the 10th day and she faced various health problems, including hypoglycaemia (falling glucose level in blood) and hypocalcaemia (falling calcium level). Blood transfusion has been performed on her three times so far. The doctors requested some of the lactating mothers to feed the baby. The staff at SNCU lodged a complaint with the police stating that the baby was abandoned and later, handed her over to Sishugruha though the baby is still taken care of by them.

“Presently, the baby weighs 1.778 kg and is healthy. We want the Collector to name the baby and hand her over to Sishugruha,” Dr. Raheem told The Hindu .
