Work on two colleges progresses simultaneously

Work on construction of new buildings for Bharathiar University’s constituent colleges is progressing simultaneously at Sivagiri town, where the institution is currently functioning out of the campus of Government Boys Higher Secondary School and at Ezhumathur, about 12 km away.

Resisted

On the advice of the State Government, the university thought it fit to have two campuses after the move to shift the entire college to Ezhumathur was resisted by residents of Sivagiri town and neighbouring villages.

At Ezhumathur, the campus meant for PG programmes is coming up on sprawling 25-acre area.

The campus in Sivagiri will come up on a five-acre area provided by the local body free of cost.

In the backdrop of rising student strength, the temporary campus has turned inadequate.

Within a few years of start, the college is poised to have an overall student strength of 2,200 during academic year 2016-17.

Since the work at Ezhumathur campus was initiated first, the buildings there will be ready earlier.

But, the university will take a call on utilisation of the Ezhumathur campus next year.

Though the school education department has not given any deadline to the college to move out of the temporary campus, the university is expected to expedite works at both the centres to avoid the ignominy of shifting the constituent college en bloc to Ezhumathur next year, it is learnt.

Locals in and around Sivagiri have no qualms about the PG wing being shifted to the Ezhumathur campus.

Temporary facility

The UG campus must continue to function at the temporary facility until the new buildings are readied in Sivagiri, parents have understandably emphasised to the university.
