Vellore Corporation to go to polls on Oct. 17

Vellore Corporation will go to the polls on October 17, the day of the first phase of elections for local bodies in the State. The polls would also be held on the same day for Arakkonam, Arcot, Melvisharam, Ranipet and Walajapet municipalities and town panchayats of Ammoor, Kalavai, Kaveripakkam, Nemili, Panapakkam, Pennathur, Sholinghur, Thakkolam, Thimiri, Thiruvalam and Vilapakkam.

The election would be held for the following panchayat unions in the first phase of polls -- Anaicut, Arakkonam, Arcot, Kaniyambadi, Kaveripakkam, Nemili, Sholinghur, Thimiri, Vellore and Walajapet, according to a press release.

The Ambur, Gudiyatham, Jolarpet, Pernambut, Tirupattur and Vaniyambadi municipalities will go to the polls in the phase-2 of elections to be held on October 19, while the election would also be held for the town panchayats of Alangayam, Natrampalli, Odugathur, Pallikonda, Uthayendiram on the same day. Polls for the panchayat unions of Alangayam, Gudiyatham, Jolarpet, Katpadi, K.V. Kuppam, Kandhili, Madhanur, Natrampalli, Pernambut and Tirupattur will be held in the second phase.

In Vellore district, the elections would be held for the post of 60 Corporation councillors, 324 municipal councillors and 252 town panchayat ward members in the urban parts.

In the rural areas, the elections would be held for 40 district panchayat ward members, 390 panchayat union ward members, 743 village panchayat chairpersons and 6,078 village panchayat ward members, a press release said.

The last date for filing of nominations is October 3, while the last date for withdrawal of candidature is October 6.

Counting of votes will be held on October 21.

A total of 4,719 polling stations have been established for the two phases of the local body polls.

As per the electoral list published on September 17, there are a total of 30,49,085 voters – 15,12,760 men, 15,36,269 women and 56 transgender – in Vellore district.
