In a freak incident, an under-trial prisoner, Selvam (42) of YMR Patti of Dindigul in Tamil Nadu on Saturday morning escaped from the Government General Hospital in Chittoor, hoodwinking the escort personnel.

According to sources, Selvam alias Bullet Selvam, an accused in the red sanders smuggling case, was nabbed near Seshachalam hills at Chaneragiri on June 12, 2014, and was lodged at Chittoor district jail. On Saturday morning, he complained of sudden illness, and he was taken to the hospital with police escort.

On the pretext of attending a nature call, he bolted the door from inside bathroom, and escaped through the window, after removing the glass panes. Police said he was also involved in ganja trafficking.

A hunt was launched for the fugitive. Special police parties were formed to take on him, while the neighbouring police stations and inter-district check posts on the Chittoor-TN borders were alerted.
