The Chengalpattu taluk police found themselves on a sticky wicket on Wednesday for impounding cattle that were transported in two goods carriers
A group of people staged a road roko at the Pulipakkam junction on the Grand Southern Trunk Road near the Chengalpattu by-pass against “police action”.
The animals were later released in the afternoon through a Court order. According to police, they received a complaint late on Tuesday night from an animal welfare activistthat 41 cattle were being transported by road in two goods vehicles – 21 in one vehicle and 20 in another – from Tiruvannamalai and Thirukovilur to Chennai. Subsequently, the police intercepted the vehicles near Paranur Toll Plaza and brought them to Chengalpattu Taluk police station.
Within hours, a large number of people belonging to a minority community converged at the Chengalpattu police station before dawn on Wednesday and raised slogans against the police for impounding the cattle which were being taken to Chennai for slaughter.
They withdrew their agitation after an hour as senior officials told them to seek legal remedy since a case had been registered.
