Alagappa University Vice-Chancellor S. Subbiah has said teachers should be role models as students learn many things from them.

Addressing the orientation programme for freshers of Faculty of Education at the university here on Tuesday, he said “a nation’s progress lies in the hands of teachers”.

Stating that “mother is the first teacher and the teacher is a second mother” he said the teachers should realise their duties and responsibilities. Teaching was the noblest professions in the world, he said, adding in other professions, one might earn money, but in teaching the teachers made others happy and in return derived happiness.

Mastery over subjects and updating of knowledge were very crucial to become effective teachers. That was a way to produce good and responsible citizens.

The objective of education was not only to earn money but to serve society.

He asked the students to make use of the library facilities available at the university and bring laurels to the institution by making remarkable achievements.
