‘Strengthen bunds of tanks, lakes before monsoon’

District Collector V. Sampath directed the PWD and the local body officials to take effective steps to strengthen the bunds of tanks, lakes and other water bodies in the district before the onset of the north-east monsoon.

Addressing a meeting of the officials of different departments on the precautionary measures to be taken to manage any emergency during the north-east monsoon period here on Wednesday, Mr. Sampath urged the officials to monitor the weather report regularly. The PWD should take initiative for increasing the height and strengthening the banks of River Cauvery wherever necessary.

The local officials should have the telephone numbers of schools, local VIPs, heads of the local bodies along with the particulars who owned coracles.

All the VAOs and village assistants should stay put in the headquarters during the emergencies. The official teams should conduct night patrolling.

Awareness should be created among the common people on disaster management at the grama sabha meetings.

The local bodies should identify the defects in the shutters in tanks and lakes and renovate them immediately. Steps should also be taken to remove the encroachments from all the water bodies to ensure the flow of water.
