Production in the second unit of NLC Tamil Nadu Power Limited (NTPL) was stopped on Tuesday to carry out annual maintenance work. Power generation from the coal-based thermal power unit with a capacity of 500 MW was suspended at 12 midnight, sources said. This unit was shut down and production would remain suspended for a period of 15 days. A team of technical experts is involved in the maintenance work. Since there was considerable generation of wind power, this unit was shut down to carry out maintenance work.

The first unit in the same plant with a production capacity of 500 MW has been functioning as usual. Around 6 p.m., this unit produced 411 MW of power, sources said.

In the Tuticorin Thermal Power Station (TTPS), its fourth unit with a capacity of 210 MW was kept on a standby mode on Monday following a directive from the load dispatch centre. Moreover, the third unit of TTPS, also with a capacity of 210 MW, was shut down for maintenance.

However, the other three units with a capacity of 210 MW each were running in full swing, sources said. By way of wind energy, 1,269 MW of power, had been generated currently, sources from the Tirunelveli Circle of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation told The Hindu . Of the total generation, 1006 MW was generated from the Shencottah pass while 263 MW was from the Aralvaimozhi pass.

Besides, 272 MW of wind energy from Theni pass and 224 MW from Dindigul pass had been generated. On July 14, the wind power generation stood at 2,382 MW under the Tirunelveli Circle and it was at its peak in the recent past, sources said.
