Joint Director of Medial and Rural Health Services M. Vijayakumar has instructed the owners of all the 172 scan centres functioning in the district to immediately surrender their existing licences issued in Form B and obtain the licences in the new format developed by the department.
Dr. Vijayakumar told The Hindu that the existing licence holders should contact the health officials concerned and submit the existing licence, two passport-size photographs and invoice of the scan machines to get the licence in the new format.
“We are issuing the licences in the new formats with photographs introduced in the document this time, to avoid any malpractices. The owners of the centres should display the new licences with the photographs in the reception hall of the scan centres so that people will know who is the doctor in-charge of the centre”, he said.
According to him, only medical doctors with requisite additional qualifications like training in radio diagnosis can operate the scan centres.
The scan centre operators could carry out the tests to analyse the health and growth of the foetus but never should determine the sex of the foetus, he reminded.
