Road widening work begins in Nagapattinam, Perambalur

The Highways Department has taken up a series of works in Perambalur and Nagapattinam districts for ensuring road safety.

In Perambalur district, 87 road works and 13 bridges and culverts have been taken up at an estimate of Rs.163.25 crore.

“The works are being executed in a fast phase and road works to a total cumulative length of 83 km has been completed so far and the balance 31.82 km would be completed soon,” said K. Nandakumar, District Collector.

He also said that the work on widening and improving the Krishnapuram – Koogaiyur road which was upgraded into ‘other district road’ has been taken up for a length of nine km at an estimate of Rs.15 crore.

He said that the work on the construction of a minor bridge at Rs.70 lakh was in progress on Thuraiyur – Perambalur highway. Work on improving the Athur – Perambalur highway to a length of 6.20 km with minor bridges at an estimate of Rs. 10 crore has also been taken up. He said that service road was being laid at Anganur – Sannasinallur highway where a bridge has been constructed.

In Nagapattinam district, the Highways Department has taken up works on improving roads in interior villages. “Water-logging during the monsoon poses a serious problem to the safety of the highways,” an official told The Hindu on Saturday.

The Highways Department has identified the sections where water-logging posed a problem. A stretch of the highway to a cumulative length of four km on the Mayiladuthurai - Poompuhar segment has been taken up at an estimate of Rs. three crore.

“The old road is being dug out and new one is being laid,” the source said.
