Keep one bank

open on Sundays

There are several banks in and around No. 1 Tollgate which is a convergence point for residents of Lalgudi, Manachanallur, Samayapuram, and other adjacent areas. People from these areas visit No 1 Tollgate. If one of the banks renders service on Sunday, it will be a big help for the public.

Run one more

train to Mysuru

The number of passengers travelling between Thanjavur and Mysuru is burgeoning day by day and current train services are inadequate. We request Southern Railway to operate one more daily train service on this route to cater to the demand.

Spraying pesticides

This refers to the article “Pesticide residue report must for export of four farm produce to UAE” ( The Hindu , May 28). A large number of people involved in applying pesticides are either agricultural labourers or small and marginal farmers in our State. They do not follow the recommended dosage or spraying method properly. There is a dire need to improve awareness among them and farmers about correct handling and storage of pesticides. Hence necessary education and training programmes should be organised for farmers in this regard. Women, children, and health workers are to be educated for safe and effective handling of pesticides. Strict monitoring by government machinery is needed. Request the Department of Agriculture to take steps to protect the consumers and the environment as a whole.

Restore bus service

Thuraiyur and Lalgudi are major towns and taluk headquarters. A direct bus service from Thuraiyur to Lalgudi via Kottathur, Puthanampatti, Edumalai, Thirupattur, Siruganur and Rettimangudi was withdrawn recently causing hardship to students and government employees. I request the authorities to restore the service via Puthanampatti.

Kudamuritti

bridge too narrow

The Kudamuritti bridge on the outskirts of Tiruchi is narrow and traffic snarls frequent. With the increase in traffic volume, the bridge needs to be widened for smooth flow of traffic.

Haphazard

parking

The problem of haphazard parking in Srirangam needs to be analysed and solved by the Tiruchirapalli City Corporation and the local police. Travel companies illegally occupy the road space in front of houses by parking their cars and vans. Owners of taxis, buses, and lorries must be made to realise that they pay road tax only for plying vehicles on the roads and not for parking.

Repair road

M.M. Nagar is a two decades old locality on the eastern side of Uyyakondan Thirumalai Temple. Our area has two main streets and four cross streets. A private school is functioning here and scores of vehicles ply on the mud road ,which is used by residents for walking and exercising. The mud road leads to Kodappu, a residential area.

The trips by cars, scooters, and even lorries cause a nuisance to people living in M.M. Nagar. Poorly laid roads in 2008 have broken up. They are not fit even for bicycles.

Lack of proper drainage system and failure to clear the garbage regularly complete the cup of woes of the residents.

Taxpayer’s

money wasted

In Puducherry (UT) in the recent Assembly elections, the Congress-DMK alliance has won the majority. However, the Congress has selected a non-elected member to head the government. Now, he has to become an MLA within six months. This is going to result in wasteful expenditure of money for the government to conduct an election. The Centre should bring in an amendment in the law to prohibit selection of non-elected members to head the government.

Ban harmful

additives

A recent study conducted by the Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) points to the presence of possible cancer-causing additives in bread and bakery products. The Tamil Nadu Government should immediately take steps to ban the use of such harmful chemicals in bread.

A healthy trend

in TN politics

The victory of the AIADMK and the emergence of the DMK as a strong Opposition has created a new dawn on the political horizon in Tamil Nadu and has paved the way for the establishing the fine principles of Indian democratic set-up. Chief Minister Jayalalithaa extending thanks to M.K. Stalin for attending her swearing-in ceremony and conveying her wish that she would work in tandem with his party for the uplift of the State reflects the healthy reciprocity between the two rivals.
