Human chains

This has reference to the news item on the formation of a human chain by students of two women’s colleges in Tirunelveli to create awareness among public of the need to donate eyes. I have noticed several times here that whenever an awareness programme for any public cause is arranged by any NGO or others, mostly girls are deployed to stand in the hot sun to form the so called human chain or walk in a small procession to attract the attention of passers-by to get alerted on the issues. At times, because of the scorching sun, the chain is broken within a short duration. Though there is no second opinion on the good cause of the programmes, I wonder why more boys from colleges are not engaged in this sort of awareness rally so that the duration could be longer, covering a large number of people. It is my opinion that if the programme is conducted in the evening, it will not disturb their studies in the precious morning hours.

Ban burning of effigies

From time immemorial, we have cultivated the culture of burning effigies in the middle of the road. Unfortunately, Tamil Nadu tops in this act. I do not know its origin. There are so many other ways of exhibiting one’s condemnation. I wish the Government came forward to ban burning of effigies.

Transplant tree

Buildings on Palayamkottai Road in Tuticorin were demolished by corporation authorities a year ago. At that time, Vembadi Esakkiamman Temple built around a big neem tree near VOC College was also shifted to the southern side and worship is being done there. But the tree still remains on the highway posing a threat to commuters and devotees. It is highly precarious during night when the visibility is poor due to lack of lighting arrangement. The road is very narrow in this area due to the presence of the tree and during festival season, devotees gather around the tree to offer worship unmindful of the speeding vehicles on the road. May I request the authorities to look into the matter and ensure safety of devotees and commuters by transplanting the tree on the southern side of the road near the temple to avert any accident?

Extend day train

At present, there is no direct day train service between Kanyakumari and Madurai. Except Tirunelveli-Kanyakumari day train, no train service is available between these two stations. A request has already been made by travellers from Kanyakumari district and Thiruvananthapuram for extension of the Tiruchi-Tirunelveli Intercity Express to Thiruvananthapuram.

Another demand for extending the MEMU train from Thiruvananthapuram to Tirunelveli may be considered, during daytime. But Thiuvananthapuram Division railway authorities are not prepared to consider the demand of travellers. I request the Thiruvananthapuram Division railway authorities to consider the demand to extend Thiruvananthapuram-Nagerrcoil MEMU train to Madurai during day time.

Railway court

Before introduction of the Code of Criminal Procedure, there was a honorary magistrate’s court functioning at the Tirunelveli railway junction exclusively to deal with cases booked by the Railway Police as well as RPF. Even after more than 41 years have elapsed, there is no full-fledged Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court in the place of the erstwhile Railway HFCM’S Court at Tirunelveli Junction. The prosecuting agencies such as RP and RPF are not able to control the crimes in trains from Madurai to Kanyakumari, Tiruchendur, Tuticorin and Shencottah by making effective on-the-spot arrest of culprits and conducting trial in a particular court due to non-availability of a court similar to the defunct court at Tirunelveli junction. For more than four decades, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari districts have not been provided with even a single Railway Court for conducting railway cases.
