Even as power generation in the first reactor of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) is getting delayed by a month owing to maintenance , the second reactor will be ready for producing electricity in December this year.
R.S. Sundar, Site Director, KKNPP, told reporters on Wednesday that maintenance work in the first reactor had taken more time than anticipated and efforts were on to generate power from the unit in October instead of September. The first reactor, for the scheduled annual spent fuel outage, was stopped on June 24. He said removal of dummy fuel assemblies from the second reactor had been completed and the mandatory inspections and tests to be done prior to the loading of enriched uranium fuel assemblies were going on.
Loading of actual fuel assemblies would begin after approval from Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. “Since this exercise will consume two months, generation power in the second reactor may be expected in December this year,” Mr. Sundar said.
