Bharatiya Janata Party executive committee member Ganapathi of Ambedkar Nagar in Thenkarai in Periyakulam constituency filed a petition with Returning Officer Anandhi on Wednesday, challenging eligibility of sitting MLA and Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate A. Lazar to contest from Periyakulam (Reserved) constituency.

In the petition, Mr. Ganapathi, who contested in 2011 as BJP candidate here, stated that Mr. Lazar was a Christian and not qualified to contest in the reserved constituency.

Mr. Ganapathi also appealed to the RO not to accept his nominations.

A case filed in this connection was under trial in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, he said. He had also submitted a similar petition against Mr. Lazar in the 2011 Assembly election.

Already, DMK candidate for Periyakulam constituency R. Anbalagan had filed a case against Mr. Lazar in the Madras High Court in this connection.

He had contested as DMK candidate against him in 2011 election too.
