An Indian gaur that strayed into a farm in the foothills of the Western Ghats gored to death a 75-year-old woman on Tuesday.
Police said that M. Nainammal Beevi of Puliyangudi had gone to her farm to collect lemon around 7 a.m. on Tuesday. When she was collecting lemon, the Indian gaur that entered the farm gored her to death.
Since the old woman failed to return home in the evening, her family members went to the farm only to find her body lying on the ground with grievous injury on the abdomen.
On being alerted by the relatives, Puliyangudi police retrieved the body and sent it to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.
Forest officials promised the family members that they would inform the State government of the wild animal attack and get compensation for them.
Wild animals living in the Western Ghats invading cultivable lands in the foothills has become a routine affair as the solar fences erected to check their entry are now defunct. Consequently, the continuing man-animal conflict results in loss of lives, the farmers complain.
