NSS volunteers to help people with disabilities

Volunteers of the National Service Scheme will bring the people with disabilities to the polling booths to exercise their franchise on May 16. This is part of the steps taken for ensuring cent per cent voting in the five constituencies in the Karaikal district, said Satyendra Singh Dursawat, District Collector.

In a release here on Sunday, the Collector said that 162 NSS volunteers from different colleges across the district had been drafted for polling duty. A special drive was taken up in the district for identifying the differently-abled persons.

Wheelchairs would be provided wherever needed. This apart, special arrangements would be made for mobilising the people with disabilities from their residences to the booth for exercising the franchise and for their return home.

A training programme on this was organised here on Sunday. Mangalette Dinesh, Additional Collector, S. Kesavan and Sreenivasan, Returning Officers said that the list of people with disabilities would be given to the volunteers.

They advised the NSS volunteers to ensure safe transit of the people with disabilities.

Ramamurthy, NSS coordinator, said wheelchairs had been provided at polling booths.

Cases registered

The Collector said Rs. 54,57,955 was seized at different places in the district by the flying squad and the static surveillance teams during the course of vehicle check-up.

Of it, Rs. 48,06,185 had been returned following submission of adequate and valid documents.

The police have registered cases for the transit of unaccounted cash of Rs. 6,51,770, he said.

Mangalette Dinesh, Additional Collector, supervised the arrangements for the despatch of Electronic Voting Machines to all the booths in the district.

He opened the seal at the strong room at the Arignar Anna Government Arts and Science College.
