No word yet on Thanjavur, Aravakurichi polls

August 23, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 07:47 am IST - CHENNAI:

More than three months since its unprecedented decision to cancel the polls for the Thanjavur and Aravakurichi Assembly constituencies originally scheduled for May 19, the EC is yet to take any decision on holding elections to these constituencies.

Likewise, the Commission is yet to take any decision on conducting the by-poll for Tiruparankundram constituency following the death of its elected representative and AIADMK leader S.M. Seenivel barely days after the election.

A senior official of the Election Commission, who requested anonymity, told The Hindu on Monday that there has been no discussion over conducting the polls in Thanjavur and Aravakurichi so far and also pointed out the absence of any time limit for the conduct of polls in such cases. “Unlike in cases of death of a sitting legislator, there is no rule that demands the Commission to hold elections within a timeframe in constituencies where polls have been cancelled or countermanded,” he said.

The EC had decided to cancel the polls scheduled in Thanjavur and Aravakurichi citing reports of seizure of huge money.
