The Neyveli Lignite Corporation is likely to increase its power generation capacity by 1,500 MW during this year. With this, the installed capacity of the NLC in Tamil Nadu will go up from 2,470 MW to 3,970 MW.

NLC Chairman-cum-Managing Director B. Surender Mohan hinted at the prospects of scaling up power generation while delivering a speech at the inauguration of the Neyveli Book Fair here on Friday.

Mr. Mohan said that the NLC was eagerly looking forward to the commissioning of the coal-fired 1,000-MW power plant, a joint venture of the NLC and the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation, at Tuticorin and the lignite fuelled 500-MW (2 x 250 MW) Thermal Power Station-II Expansion in Neyveli.

He further said that it had been a constant endeavour of the NLC to raise the bar in terms of production and productivity.

The team work put in by the executives, employees and workmen had made it possible for the NLC to put up a good show.

In his candid observation the Chairman also noted that the NLC had been taking all-out measures to safeguard environment “because it wants to see the people in the surrounding villages happy so the NLC can survive and thrive.”

Neyveli was emerging as a “hub of education” due to the promotional activities undertaken by the NLC. Of the total number of 35,000 students studying in the NLC schools, 70 per cent hail from the peripheral areas.

The contribution of the NLC towards improving woman literacy was quite substantial and noteworthy. Mr. Mohan also noted that the annual Neyveli Book Fair was being organised as part of the Corporate Social Responsibility to contribute to the creation of knowledge society.

The NLC had issued 15,000 free entry passes to the students from the districts of Cuddalore and Villupuram and the Union Territory of Puducherry to visit the fair, the Chairman added.
