Providing a rare sight to the passers-by, Nilgiri Tahrs have been spotted on the roadside along the Udumalpet-Attakatty stretch, falling under Anamalai Tiger Reserve area, on Sunday.
“Nilgiri Tahr is a shy animal and usually can be seen on the peaks/pointed top of hills/mountains. So, it is indeed a fascinating experience to see the animals on the road”, District Forest Officer A. Periasamy, who also was fortunate to sight the animal on the roadside, told The Hindu .
In search of water
According to him, the animals looked to have come in search of water in the area.
Once the people moved closer to take photographs, the animals immediately rushed into the forest cover.
The species is safeguarded under the Wildlife Protection Act to save them from extinction, sources said.
