Swami Vivekananda, the chief apostle of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, has founded the Ramakrishna Math and Mission to preserve the thoughts of the 19th century saint and it would continue to work towards harmony of religions, Swami Suhitanadaji, General Secretary of the Math, has said.

For Swami Vivekananda, the thoughts and preaching of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa were precious jewels and he was looking for a box to preserve the jewels, when he founded the Ramakrishna Math and Mission at Belur Math in West Bengal to propagate the vision of the saint, he said.

Addressing after inaugurating the new branch of Ramakrishna Math here on Sunday, he said the Math was extremely happy that the new branch, 181st branch was established at the guest house of Maharaja Bhaskara Sethupathy’s palace, where Swami Vivekananda had stayed on his return from the US.

Swami Vivekananda had stayed in the guest house for three days on January 29, 30 and 31, 1897 on his return after addressing the famous Chicago Parliament Religion and the Math has decided to establish its branch in the historic sacred place in memory of Swami Vivekananda, he said.

Paying glowing tributes to King Bhaskara Sethupathy for sponsoring Vivekananda’s visit to the US, he said the King had found the greatness of Vivekananda even before he became world famous after the Chicago address and honoured Swamiji by extending a royal reception on his return.

Appreciating the presence of Kumaran Sethupathy, and his wife Rajeswari Nachiyar, the descendents of the King, in the function, Suhitanandaji said the function would be meaningless without their presence.

He also hailed the noble gesture of Swami Athamanandaji, the head of Kanavaipudur and Amaravathipudur Ashrams, who had bought the guest house and built a temple seven years ago and donated the place for Ramakrishna Math to establish the branch.

The branch would extend all kinds of assistance, including financial assistance to poor students, besides providing vocational training and nursing courses to men and women, Swami Abhiramananda, Present of the Ramakrishna Math branch said.

“The branch

would extend all kinds of

assistance

to poor students”
