Model code has hit sales, say traders

To check violations of model code of conduct, members of flying squad have intensified their vehicle checks at various places in the district.

On Saturday, a lorry carrying wooden logs from Yercaud was intercepted in the foothills by election officials and the driver was questioned about the load. Since, he produced documents the lorry was let off. Likewise, officials are regularly checking vehicles in toll gates, bypass and at junction roads in the city and in villages. Traders have threatened to stage protest if goods meant for markets are seized by officials. They also said that shopkeepers from villages who come to markets for purchasing goods are affected by the model code of conduct and the sales have come down.
