Farmers who wish to avail government assistance under the special kuruvai package in the district can register their names with the respective agricultural extension centres, Collector A.Saranavelraj has said.

The state government has allotted Rs.72.55 lakhs for the district under the special package. The Agriculture Department is gearing up to implement the special kuruvai package announced by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to help farmers raise the crop. The package would be implemented only in the delta areas of Thirumanur, T.Pazhur and Jayamkondam taluks of the district.

Apart from three-phase power supply for 12 hours a day, four different components of the package would be implemented in the district.

Farmers would be extended backend subsidy of Rs. 4,000 an acre for mechanised transplantation and preparation of mat nurseries. The amount would be directly credited to the bank accounts of beneficiaries. The subsidy would be extended to about 1,000 acres. The subsidy would be available to farmers who had taken up kuruvai cultivation after June 1. Farmers with about 1,500 acres with alkaline and saline fields would be given five kg of micro nutrients, each worth Rs. 170, free of cost. Besides, farmers would be provided 10 kg of zinc sulphate each free to cover an area of about 2,500 acres. A farmer can avail the benefit either for getting the micro nutrient or the zinc sulphate.

About 100 units of HDPE pipes to irrigate the fields would be provided with full subsidy to farmers in the district, Mr.Saravanavelraj said.

Farmers who wish to avail the package would have to submit separate applications for different components before the end of this month. Farmers seeking subsidy for mechanical transplanting would have to provide photo copies of their bank passbooks and photographs for having taken up mechanical transplantation in their fields.

The list of farmers eligible to get the subsidy under the package is being prepared by the respective offices of the Assistant Directors of Agriculture and farmers are requested to register their names and submit applications at the earliest, he said.
