Jeeva Contract Labourers Union serves strike notice on NLC

April 15, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - CUDDALORE:

The contract workers owing allegiance to Jeeva Contract Labourers Union affiliated to the AITUC have served a strike notice on the management of Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) in support of their charter of demands including their regularisation. M. Sekar, special secretary of Jeeva Contract Labourers Union said the union had sent a strike notice to the management on Wednesday to mark their protest against lack of any response to their demands and failure to invite them for talks.

The union has given an ultimatum that if the NLC management fails to fulfil these demands they would be constrained to go on strike in the next 15 days. The Supreme Court had directed the NLC management to initiate the process of regularisation of contract workers based on a common seniority list. But the management was adopting delaying tactic in this regard, he said. Contract workmen who had put in up to 40 years of service were facing uncertain future as they were not sure when their services would be regularised.

Mr. Sekar said the Chief Labour Commissioner had directed the management to provide DA to contract workers with retrospective effect.
