As part of its countrywide campaign, the Erode district unit of Indian Union Muslim League carried out a signature drive on Thursday opposing move to implement Uniform Civil Code.

According to the party, the purpose to enlist support of one crore people for the campaign was to safeguard personal laws of religious minorities.

The party sought scrapping of Article 44 of the Constitution, reasoning out that it contradicted fundamental rights.A decision on the launch of signature campaign to coincide with Eid-al-Adha was taken earlier this month by the party at Chennai.
