Childline staff prevented two child marriages in the district on Wednesday.

In the first incident, Subramani of Upputhurai village had arranged marriage for his 16-year-old daughter. Acting on a tip-off, Childline volunteers Muneeswaran and Vijayalakshmi interacted with her father, who assured to stop the marriage.

But he decided to go as per schedule and planned to conduct the wedding of his daughter with a relative at night. He did not even print the marriage invitation and invited close relatives personally.

The Childline members, along with Kadamalaigundu police, once again rushed to the house and rescued the girl. They left the girl in the custody of a children’s home.

In the other incident, Udayakumar of Dharmathupatti in Bodinaickanur union had arranged marriage for his 14-year-old daughter, studying ninth standard, with his relative R. Eswaran (25) of Bodi.

Acting on a tip-off, ChildLine Volunteers M. Rajendran and Chandra went to the marriage hall and tried to stop the marriage. When the parents of bride and the groom refused to oblige, they were brought to Bodi police station and warned of legal action. Later, they agreed to convert the marriage arrangement into betrothal and perform the marriage later. Both parents gave their assurance in writing to the police.
