Family of four commits suicide

Four members of a family in Tindivanam allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison on Thursday night.

According to police, Pon Kumar (50), a resident of Sarkarathoppu, his wife Sumathi (45), son Deenadayalan (25) employed at a private company in Chennai and daughter Shanmugapriya (18), studying plus two in a private school in Tindivanam decided to end their lives by consuming pesticide at around 10.30 p.m.

Neighbours heard their cries for help and rushed them to the Tindivanam Government Hospital. While Pon Kumar, Sumathi and Shanmugapriya died enroute to the hospital Deenadayalan succumbed at the Government Medical College and Hospital at Mundiyambakkam.

Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that Pon Kumar, a former panchayat president was into real estate business. Though no suicide note was recovered from the house police suspect that financial problems could have led the family to take the extreme step.
