Euphoria over water release evaporates

September 24, 2016 12:00 am | Updated November 01, 2016 08:41 pm IST - SALEM:

Even while delta districts celebrate the flow of water released from Mettur Dam on Friday, the fall in the realisation of water at the dam is causing concern among the officials.

The joy of farmers over the directive of the Supreme Court to release about 15,000 cusecs a day for 10 days and again 6,000 cusecs a day for a few more days was shortlived with Karnataka closing down the sluices of both Krishnaraja Sagar and Kabini reservoirs citing non-availability of water even for drinking purpose in that State.

The inflow into the dam dipped to a paltry 1,780 cusecs on Friday morning.

The water level, which had been rising steadily since September 10 following release of water from dams in Karnataka, started dipping on Thursday.

With Karnataka refusing to release water to Tamil Nadu, any hope of increase in the inflow into Mettur dam now depends on the rain in the catchment areas, say farmers representatives.
