The inter-school and inter-collegiate competitions conducted by the Department of Environmental Sciences of Periyar University in connection with the World Earth Day celebrations at the university premises evoked good response.

More than 1,200 boys and girls from about 140 government middle, high and higher secondary schools and seven government arts colleges participated in the essay writing, drawing, and elocution competitions.

The titles of the competitions were ‘global climate change’, ‘organic farming: need for today’, ‘natural resource protection and waste management’.

The preliminary rounds of the competitions for the government school and college students were held on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The event was sponsored by the Ministry of Earth Science, New Delhi. The competitions were held in two categories: Group I: for the students of Standards VI to X and Group II: for the students of Plus-One and Plus-Two and graduation students of arts colleges.

60 selected

Sixty were selected for the final rounds slated for June 24 at the university, according to P. Jayanthi, assistant professor, Department Environment Sciences of the university.

The winners will be presented with cheques of Rs. 5,000 towards first prize, Rs. 4,000 towards second prize and Rs. 3,000 towards third prize, along with certificates.
